Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
As an undergraduate at Flinders University, I've made an effort to engage myself in activities related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in order to build my understanding and appreciation for their different cultures, languages and peoples. I have watched films about Indigenous Australians (such as 12 Canoes), planned a professional learning activity, planned and taught lessons on Indigenous Australian culture, assisted Indigenous Australian students in their studies, and I am constantly updating myself about reconciliation through social media, such as via the Recognise Twitter account.
The examples I have provided above are evidence of my ability to understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. I take pride in displaying respect to the traditional owners of the Australian land and, with consideration and thought, aim to teach others to do so too.
